Emaline Scarlett is a vibrant and smart girl adopted from China into a beautiful and loving family. She was brought to the United States completely unrepaired. Although Emaline is an established patient in Dr. Kapitan's clinic, this is not a requirement to receive a Cleft Out Foundation grant. Please take a moment to watch the video her family made about Emaline's adoption.
Treating children affected by cleft lip & palate no matter their financial situation.
The Cleft Out Foundation was created to help families bear the on-going financial cost for children born with cleft lip and/or palate. Since most insurance does not cover on-going specialized care, many of these kids grow up with speech, feeding, emotional and social issues related to their cleft lip & palate.
The Cleft Out Foundation aims to serve the local Charlotte community by sponsoring families in need. Watch our video for more information!
The Cleft Out Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded by Dr. Rick Kapitan in 2017, in Charlotte, NC. In short, the aim of the Foundation is to provide a pool of resources to help Charlotte area families to meet the many financial needs associated with treating children born with Cleft Lip & Palate. These resources are intended to be used for medically-necessary procedures and therapy for cleft lip & palate patients in order to assist in the development of the children throughout their childhood.
Cleft Lip & Palate is a birth condition that affects nearly 1 in 700 children born in the United States of America each year. The condition is caused from issues related to genetic changes that occur during development of the child early on in pregnancy. While the severity of the condition may vary, all children born with this condition are automatically faced with challenges ranging from feeding and speech to dental and facial development. They undergo a long series of treatments (both surgical and nonsurgical) from birth until adulthood, and the burden of the near constant need for medical care is great on these children and their families.
These treatments are recommended by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who gather to evaluate and discuss the patient's individual needs prior to making their recommendations. While medical insurance often covers the majority of the costs associated with the initial surgeries that are needed, not all costs are covered, such as orthodontics, speech therapy, dentistry, and certain reconstructive surgeries. The total out-of-pocket cost of the care of a single child with this condition can total in excess of $50,000 USD, placing a very large financial burden on families.
No family in our area should have to delay or forgo their child's medical and dental treatment for cleft lip & palate due to cost. We have the knowledge, the skills, and the patients in need right here in the Charlotte area. We now want to provide the resources, and truly "Close the Gap" by providing the funding needed to complete their care.
Cleft Out Foundation was chosen as a featured charity for A Night For Smiles 2018 fundraising gala.

Children with this health problem need constant team care and may require surgical procedures until the age of twenty. Many of the procedures are covered through private and government funding but the majority of the children have excessive financial burden. The Cleft Out Foundation was established to help ease that burden.
The Foundation will sponsor children and families who are in need of things like specialized feeding bottles, wound care items, orthodontics, speech therapy and other surgical and non-surgical therapy.
The administration and distribution of the funds are overseen by the Cleft Out Foundation Board of Directors, who will accept and review applications for funding on a quarterly basis. All Foundation Board Members are professionals who volunteer their time, leaving 100% of the funds available for the benefit of our children.
If these children have full access to the multi-disciplinary care available, they will grow up to have happy, normal lives. When access to that care is limited by financial constraints, it compromises the care they receive and can have negative lifelong effects. Our goal is to help families afford the highest level of care possible so that those smiles shine.
